Complaints Directory
If you’ve experienced Obstetric Violence (mistreatment, disrespect and abuse in reproductive healthcare) speaking up about it can help break the cycle and improve care for all.
On this page, find information about possible places to direct your feedback and complaints across Canada.
Provinces and territories are listed in order from highest to lowest population.
This resource is provided for information purposes only and is not complete representation of options for accountability.
-
Healthcare systems, like other systems around us, can be built on oppression and harm. We can hold systems accountable and coax them towards positive change when we speak up about our experiences.
Giving feedback - good or bad - provides healthcare professionals with the opportunity to learn and grow during their long careers.
Filing formal complaints can even be framed as a loving act of harm reduction. It can help prevent others from going through similar experiences. It also ensures your experience stays on record and may be taken into account if others come forward in the future with similar concerns. We recognize that it should not be your burden to hold the healthcare system accountable on your own, and that changing the system that enables and perpetuates obstetric violence is a collective responsibility. We also recognize that large systems and structures cannot be trusted to make changes quickly on their own. Big change takes pressure from the bottom up!
Filing individual complaints is not a single solution to the systemic issue of obstetric violence, however, it is a limited first step that some folks find helpful in the larger, long-term fight for change.
This resource is just a starting place. Please read it alongside the accompanying blog post. Take what is useful for your unique situation and leave the rest.
This resource contains peer support information only and is not medical or legal advice. Please seek independent legal advice from a qualified legal professional as soon as possible if you believe your experience may warrant action through the legal system. -
